Abenaqui Alpacas Erects Barn - Part 2

Abenaqui Alpacas Erects Barn - Part 2

By: Karrie Myer
Copyright : 2009

Part 2 of our barn building article. Last time, in Part 1, we had finished the exterior framing of the barn and completed the roof. It is finally taking shape.

In April 2008 we received our pine boards. We stickered them in the barn to allow them to dry. They were fresh from the mill, fresh cut when we received them. We kept a moisture meter in the barn so we knew when the moisture content of the timber was less than 13%. That would signal to us it was okay to apply our first coat of stain.

By Fall of 2008 we were spraying down those boards and prepping them for installation.

Winter 2008 saw the beginning of siding install.

We used the blue tarps that had been temporarily protecting the interior as vapor barrier behind the siding.

By mid Summer 2009, the barn siding was "mostly" complete, missing only the trim and battens.

Farmer Steve installing the sliding door tracks.  No more hinges!

After the barn was weather tight, we got down to the task of pouring a concrete floor for the office, vet room, and feed storage areas.

Radiant floor heating infrastructure beneath the floor of the office and vet room.  Hopefully this will be powered by passive solar some day!  Click here for more details.

The floor, all poured and sloped for drainage, but not cured!
