Abenaqui Alpacas attended the New England Coastal Classic in New Gloucester Maine again this year. This is a wonderfully competitive event that draws some of the best alpacas in New England and beyond. This year Abenaqui Alpacas brought several fleeces and animals for the full fleece halter class to the show.
We brought fleeces from Signawain and Peboona this year. We skirted Sigwanain's fleece and entered it into the Dark Medium Fawn fleece category and Peboona's was prepared for the light fleece category. At just over two years of age, Sigwanain's fleece seems to get better with each year. For fineness and handle he received a score of 18 out of a possible 20 and came in second in his class.
The sleeper of the show was our very own Wawiobwan. Wawiobwan (Ben) entered into the ring second in line, his small stature and seemingly slight frame made more pronounced by the 10-time color champion that entered the ring before him. This white yearling male class showed some serious competition. Receiving a fourth place ribbon is an achievement we did not anticipate but are delighted with. It was his amazing fleece, the finess and the crimp that kept him in the final line-up. We are super proud of Wawiobwan and what we were able to produce, mixing the Pachacutti (via his dam Clover) and Hemingway (via his sire Mohican) bloodlines, that we entered Wawiobwan into the bred and owned class. Again, he was up against many of the first and second place animals from the white to light fawn yearling male classes. And again, we were not disappointed by his fifth place win.
We are looking forward to his stature to mature and what we may be able to bring home at the spring shows. This is our next Junior Herdsire.
