Making Pasture

Making Pasture

So, what did you do this Memorial Day weekend. Maybe you were out there searching the yard sales for your next treasure or trinket. Perhaps you were one of those folks travelling off to the lake house, or the ocean for some fishing, maybe the beach to enjoy the sun.

Here at Abenaqui Alpacas, we were busy. Very busy. We rented a 16,000 pound excavator to see what we could do about finishing off the clearing of that hillside. It is amazing what Farmer Steve can do with 16,000-pounds of steel.

He spent Friday night and Saturday morning pulling stumps and boulders from the hillside we plan to make into pasture. Once he was done pulling stumps and the boulders, he did his best at leveling it out a bit.

Once we were done with the pasture, we moved the machine into the paddock to finish running the utility trench and laying the pipes that will eventually bring electricity and water to the barn. It was a lot of hard work, for the both of us, but we really feel like all tha was worth it. We are so much farther along now. It is a wonderful feeling.

Check out some of the pictures of the weekend.

Here is a shot of the hillside after Farmer Steve had stumped and moved boulders. What a huge difference.

Another shot, looking down toward the brook. Cannot wait to plant pature seed on this. We have to amend the soil a bit first, but I can really see it taking shape now.

Farmer Steve in front of his heaping stump pile. This will be the location of a weekend long bonfire. You are all invited!

This morning we went into the bee hives to change out the sugar water. I asked Farmer Steve to smile. Nice smile goofball.

Some of the busy ladies taking the last drops of the old sugar water.

Piggies have gotten much bigger. I have come up with the names. Stay tuned for more info. My inspiration was the Yankees line up.

Once we were done breakfast this morning and went outside to continue the utility trench, we found Henny Penny already started the excavator.

Happy Memorial Day everyone. Don't forget what this day is all about. Remember those that have fought for us and everyone's freedom.
